Bellis Named Director of Coaching; Szewczyk Elevated to Assistant DOC at Bloomington United SC
Bloomington, MN
For Immediate Release: March 30, 2026
Bloomington United Soccer Club (BU) has named Steve Bellis as its new Director of Coaching and Tom Szewczyk as Assistant Director of Coaching, effective April 1, 2026, Executive Director Ryan Heinritz announced.
Bellis, who has served as Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Concordia University, St. Paul since 2011, brings more than a decade of collegiate success and extensive experience in Minnesota youth soccer to the role.
“Steve is a proven leader with a track record of developing players, building strong teams, and supporting coaches,” said Heinritz. “He’s the right person to elevate our club and guide our staff as we continue to grow.”
At Concordia-St. Paul, Bellis has built one of the region’s most competitive NCAA Division II programs, recording over 150 career wins, multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, and consistent regional rankings. He was named NSIC Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2024.
In addition to his collegiate success, Bellis has held key roles throughout Minnesota’s youth soccer landscape, including Director of Coaching and Player Development at Wings Soccer Club, Boys Director at Minnesota Thunder Academy, and staff positions with the Minnesota Olympic Development Program and Twin Cities Soccer League. He also currently serves as director of Minnesota’s official Nike Soccer Camps.
“I’m excited to join Bloomington United and be part of this community,” said Bellis. “Our focus is simple—help players grow, build confidence, and love the game while supporting coaches every step of the way.”
Bellis began his coaching career with Manchester United’s academy in the UK and was part of a national championship staff at Macalester College. He holds a Master’s degree in Sports Management and multiple elite coaching licenses, including UEFA and USSF ‘B’.
Internal Leadership Strengthened
As part of the club’s new staffing structure, Bloomington United has elevated longtime club leader Tom Szewczyk into the role of Assistant Director of Coaching.
“If there was one thing that stood out immediately, it was Tom’s commitment to this club and our players,” said Heinritz. “He has earned this opportunity and will play a key role in supporting our coaches and leading our coach education initiatives alongside Steve.”
Szewczyk has served as Interim Director of Coaching and brings extensive experience at both the club and high school levels. He currently serves as Head Coach of the Bloomington Jefferson High School boys program and has previously led programs at Brooklyn Center and Chanhassen High School.
“I’m proud to continue serving Bloomington United in this new role,” said Szewczyk. “This club means a great deal to me, and I’m excited to work alongside Steve and Ryan to support our players, coaches, and families.”
Strengthening Structure for Growth
Since being named Executive Director in February 2026, Heinritz has prioritized building a clear, service-driven staff structure to support the club’s continued growth.
“Our goal is to provide a consistent, high-quality experience for every player, coach, and family,” Heinritz said. “That starts with strong leadership, clear roles, and investment in coach development.”
Bloomington United is implementing a new staffing model focused on role-specific leadership, including a Director of Coaching, Assistant Director of Coaching, Technical Director, Registrar, and Club Administrator. Additional hires are expected as programming continues to grow.
Bellis will continue in his role at Concordia-St. Paul while serving Bloomington United. He resides in Southwest Minneapolis with his daughters, Pippa and Ruby.
Szewczyk will begin his role as Assistant Director of Coaching on April 1 while continuing his work with Bloomington United and Bloomington Jefferson High School.
